When Thanksgiving Day rolls around, I am always reminded of the Scripture verse noted above and there is a very good reason for the verse to come to my mind. You see, on my husbands and my 25th Wedding Anniversary on July 12, 2000, our house caught fire and we lost so many mementos and memorabilia.
There were many things that simply melted away and other things that were ruined by the extensive and voluminous water damage, as local firemen fought to extinguish the fire. When the time came that we could go into our home, the sights were unbelievable and certainly didn't look like "our home!"
As I walked into the kitchen area, I thought to myself "there's not much to save in this area..." just then my eyes went to the refrigerator. I had collected many magnets that clung to the doors of our fridge that depicted, pictures, places we had been, Mother's Day sayings from my sons and precious Bible verses, it seemed all were melted and gone.
However, as I walked closer to the appliance my view changed, there was one magnet that survived well, let's just say that most of it had withstood the fire and the water damage. As I stood there, I read these words, "In Everything Give Thanks..." what a discovery, an epiphany and revelation, it was like God speaking directly to me and to my heart.
I quickly remembered that the things on this earth, and the earth itself are just temporary, I would not be here forever, I was just traveling through on my way to my Heavenly Home! Yes, there were things that I had cherished that were now gone, but they all seemed so trivial and insignificant at this point, especially because my family and even our animals had survived the fire.
We tend to go along each day as if they will last forever and we often become attached to empty and senseless "things..." goods, odds and ends that will never last forever. I am reminded of Matthew reminding us not to cherish the treasures of earth that will be eaten by moths, worn away by rust or even stolen by burglars.
No, we aren't meant to accumulate and idolize "stuff"... especially when our earthly homes are not our permanent residences. Our true treasures as Christians, is looking towards heavenly goals, saved souls and characteristics that reflect the love of God!
Yes, the I still have that one magnet that was saved from the fire... and, it still hangs on my current refrigerator as a reminder of what is truly important in this life!! When friends happen to see it and then point out, that it's "kind of ugly or worn" I am able to share my story... and the Love of Jesus who is preparing my heavenly home
