by Richard & Robin Johnson. -© Johnson's Journey

Book Overview:
A cancer diagnosis can be shocking and overwhelming, to say the least. But what happens when a husband and wife are both diagnosed with cancers that typically have poor prognoses? Richard and Robin Johnson were the pastors of a rural Colorado church where they were both diagnosed with cancers that would change their lives forever.
“We all face ‘valley experiences,’ but how we deal with these situations and experiences will determine the outcome for us,” Richard says. “We can fall prey to fear, worry and defeat, or we can look to the Lord to help us, to strengthen us, and to become what He desires us to be in the midst of every situation.”
Through the Valley will encourage you to trust God and live victoriously in whatever you may be going through in this life, for when Jesus is all we have, Jesus is all we need!

My Daily Struggles with Auto-Immune Disease:
The Most common type of Lupus is called Systemic Lupus Erythematosus or (SLE) for short. It affects many parts of the body and this is what I have been diagnosed with.
There is also:
Neonatal Lupus, which occurs when an infant acquires auto-antibodies from its mother with SLE (auto-antibodies are immune proteins that mistakenly target and react to a person's own tissues or organs). While skin, liver, and blood problems resolve within six months, the most serious problem, congenital heart block which requires a pacemaker.
I try to not let these diseases affect my website... or my blogging, but sometimes they just do... and I've learned that's okay!! In fact if you are a regular reader you know I've taken the last 6 months off to re-group and re-direct how I'm handling the diseases. I have a great Rheumatologist who is very aware of how the diseases attack and ways I can help myself when they flare up.
Below are the auto-immune diseases I battle with on a daily basis. These diseases can be very debilitating when they flare or they decide to act up. I have had flares for as little as 2-3 months to 18-24 months. You never know when they will act up or when they will go into remission.
Because of my flare ups, I have been put on Methotrexate which is actually a Chemotherapy treatment that I take weekly at home. I also take Humira which can be very costly, but there are programs that will help you afford these shots. The Humira is a pre-filled shot that is given in the stomach - 2 inches from you naval or belly button.
My mother's fingers were all bent to the side at the top joint or the Distal Phalanx. She was never diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis or Lupus but she had all the signs as I look back upon her life. The Chemo I take has slowed the process down and only one pinky is bending sideways at the moment. All my other fingers have straightened out.
I also get synovial cysts on my finger joints (I've even have one on my toe joint now). These cysts are more annoying than painful... but its the cure that is quite painful. I see a dermatologist who injects them with steroids until they go away. Sometimes I take one shot and it clears and sometimes I need a few shots... straight into the cysts! Yes! I agree... OUCH!!
Fatigue is a chronic problem for me and it is accompanied by joint pain and stiffness. It tends to affect so many aspects of my daily life. I take naps and I also have changed habits like "cleaning the whole house in one day"! I have learned it's more important to do what I can, when I can... and I don't worry if someone drops by and they see dust... I'll get to it eventually! :o}
The Most common type of Lupus is called Systemic Lupus Erythematosus or (SLE) for short. It affects many parts of the body and this is what I have been diagnosed with.
There is also:
- Cutaneous Lupus, which causes a rash or lesion on the skin, usually when your exposed to sunlight.
- Drug-induced Lupus, similar to SLE, which is caused by an over-reaction to certain medications. Symptoms usually disappear once the medicine is stopped.

Rheumatoid Arthritis Overview
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) happens when your
body's defenses – yourimmune system –
targets your joint linings. RA affects joints
on both sides of the body, such as both hands,
both wrists, or both knees. This symmetry helps to set
it apart from other types of arthritis. It can also affect
the skin, eyes, lungs, heart, blood, or nerves.
