IN THE SAME BOAT
In the And, behold there arose a great tempest in the sea, insomuch that the ship was covered with the waves: but he was asleep. And his disciples came to him and awoke him saying Lord, save us: we perish. And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful,O ye of little faith? Then He arose and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm. But the men marveled saying, "What manner of man is this that even the winds and sea obey him?"
Recently, when a cruise ship pulled into port, the passengers got off as quickly as possible. They had spent the last few weeks enduring an outbreak of the virus, and hundreds of
them were very sick. No country would allow them to dock, until the United States said the ship could dock in Florida. One passenger, interviewed as he disembarked, said: "Well, I don't mean to complain so much. I mean I know everyone was in the same boat." His seemingly unintentional pun made the reporter smile.
In MATTHEW 8, we read about another trip on the water. Jesus got into the boat and the disciples followed Him. Then a terrible storm arose, and Jesus' disciples feared for their lives. They awakened a sleeping Jesus, who they assumed was unaware of the crisis.
While Jesus was literally, "in the same boat" as His followers, He was unconcerned about the weather. As the all-powerful Creator, He had no fear of the storm. Still he arose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there suddenly was a great calm!
But... we are not "all-powerful," and we are "oh-so-prone" to fear. So what do we do when the "storms of life" rage all around us? Whether they quickly blow over or last for a log time, we can be confident in this: "We are in the same boat with the ONE whom even the winds and sea obey!"
This life is full of uncertainties, however God has promised
us His unfailing presence. When we are tempted to panic or when we try to do things in our own strength, may we realize that "God is in the same boat with us." May we absolutely understand that He is in control of everything and we need not fear the storms of life, for we are anchored in the everlasting arms of Love! There is no danger that can come so near to us that our God is not nearer still!
