And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him. And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord's Christ.
LUKE 2:25-26
AWAITING THE MESSIAH
It's not very often that we hear about Simeon, when we talk about the Christmas story, but I believe he is very relevant to the Bible, to all Christian Believers and Christmas! Simeon was a good and Godly man, very devout, filled with the Holy Spirit and prayerfully expecting the Messiah's arrival.
The Holy Spirit had revealed to Simeon that he, a Jerusalem resident, would not die until he had seen Him -- God's anointed King! Led by the Spirit, he was in the Temple when Joseph and Mary as they brought the baby Jesus in to carry out the rituals of the Law and blessed the child.
MARY INSTINCTIVELY HANDS BABY JESUS TO SIMEON
And he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law, then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said, "Lord, now let thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word: For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people; A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel." LUKE 2:27-32
THE HOLY SPIRIT HAS A PROMISE FOR SIMEON
The Holy Spirit had compelled Simeon to go to the Temple the very day Joseph, Mary and baby Jesus had arrived to present the Lord in obedience to Jewish law, Simeon was there and Mary very naturally handed him the baby as he took the baby into his arms, praising God!
"Lord God," he said, "now I can die content! For I have seen the Messiah, our Salvation just as the Holy Spirit promised me I would. I have seen the Savior you have given to the world! He is the Light that will shine brightly upon all nations, and he will be the glory of your people of Israel!
Luke 2:33-35
JOSEPH AND MARY HAD FOLLOWED ALL THE JEWISH LAWS
Joseph and Mary abode by all the Jewish Laws and they may have come to the Temple twice. Once for Mary's purification on the 40th day after she had given birth and the second time would have been to "present Jesus" as he was the firstborn and by Jewish Law belonged to God.
SIMEON INSTANTLY KNEW THE MESSIAH
Simeon most likely met the Messiah, Baby Jesus when he was circumcised on the eighth day, by a rabbi in the village Temple. Simeon had specifically been waiting and "instantly knew" that Jesus was the Messiah.
A MESSAGE FOR JOSEPH AND MARY
Then Simeon told Joseph and Mary that not everyone would accept their son as Savior! He told them that there would e those who would reject Jesus and would not believe that he was sent from God!
The real question today is... Do You Believe Jesus Christ of Nazareth, born of a virgin, sent by Almighty God is the Messiah??
