LUKE 2:12-14
THE ANNOUNCEMENT
Out in the fields the shepherds were now making their way to see this Savior of the world, because an angel had appeared to them and announced the birth of Jesus in the city of David, called Bethlehem. Then all at once, a vast number of glorious angels appeared, the very armies of heaven!
And they all praised God, singing: "Glory to God in the highest realms of heaven! For there is peace and a good hope given to the sons of men."
AN UNFORGETTABLE TRIP
When the choir of angels disappeared back to heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let's go! Let's hurry and find this Word that is born in Bethlehem and see for ourselves what the Lord has revealed to us.
So the shepherds followed a star to the manger and found Joseph and Mary. And there in was baby Jesus, lying in a feeding trough.
Upon seeing this miraculous sign, the shepherds recounted how the angel visited them and announced the "Savior's birth." Mary was extremely tired from the misery and perseverance of childbirth, yet she listened intently to every word that the shepherds spoke.
MARY CONTEMPLATES THE SHEPHERD'S WORDS
On the one hand, Mary may have been quiet as she listened and treasured their words... all while mulling them in her heart and often pondered what they really meant. On the other hand, she was trying to grasp, the fact that this tender baby that was in her arms, this little child, truly was the Savior of the world.
This young woman truly was thoughtful. She knew that this angelic message was vital. Her God, Jehovah, wanted her to know and appreciate her son's identity and importance.
So Mary did more than listen. She stored away the words in her heart so that she could ponder them over and over again in the months and years to come. This was the "key to faith" that Mary showed throughout her life.
GLORY TO GOD IN THE HIGHEST
And, so it was as they went on their way, they were praising and glorifying God. They began to spread the word to all about this amazing child and everything that the angel had said about him. And everyone who heard the shepherds' story, were astonished by their words.
The shepherds returned to their flocks, ecstatic over the entirety of that which had happened on that night. They had seen Jesus, He who is the Christ, He who is God Himself, He who is the Messiah, and He who was the Anointed one!
KING OF KINGS & LORD OF LORDS
Is it any wonder, that the shepherds were determined to follow the star to find this King of Kings?
The religious leaders of the day evidently looked down on thee shepherds. But Jehovah clearly valued these humble, faithful men.
