MARY'S LIFE IS MOVING VERY QUICKLY
Yes, Mary traveled with her new husband Joseph to Bethlehem. Still, her world must have seemed like it was moving so quickly, one day she was just a young girl at home, who was betrothed. Until an angel visited her and she was told she would bear the 'Son of God!' Mary then traveled to visit with her cousin Elizabeth, and upon her return she married Joseph.
JUST MARRIED & TAXES ARE DUE
Married just a short time... Joseph and Mary learned they would have to "pay their taxes" just as we do to this very day! Ceasar Augustus had ordered a census to be taken throughout his Empire, the first since Quirinius was governor of Syria.
Everyone had to travel to his own ancestral hometown to be accounted for. So the young married couple was traveling to Bethlehem to be accounted for and pay their taxes. As a descendant of King David, Joseph had to go there and Mary went with her husband.
A LONG TRIP AND MARY WAS ABOUT TO DELIVER JESUS
The trip was approximately 80 miles and it would take at least a week to arrive in Bethlehem. It might have taken less time, possibly 4-5 days, but we are told that Mary was great with child and her time of delivering "Jesus" was creeping up on them.
The trip to Bethlehem would have been anything but easy as for a young lady near the end of her pregnancy. And, when they arrived in Bethlehem, Mary was in labor.
NO ROOM IN THE TOWN'S INN
Joseph probably went to the few inns that were in Bethlehem and possibly even to friend's homes that he knew. But, the Inns and homes were full and there was no room for the couple anywhere.
This was quite a predicament for the couple and I'm sure they both wondered "Where would they stay and where would Mary deliver her precious child? Would God provide a place for them?" Find out tomorrow in Part 7!
**(Joseph had married Mary but was not intimate with her until after Jesus was born and purification was completed according to the Jewish ways)
