I am only a sojourner... here on earth... my true home awaits me in heaven! I do not always understand all the bends and curves in the roads, I have traveled... but I know my Lord holds the answers... and He holds me in His hands!
What may look to me like a "shipwreck..." may well be the "cruise" of a lifetime! It may very well bring me on an expedition filled with joys... joys I would never have known otherwise! God's love and God's ways are so much more than I can think of or dream about! I am content to know my Savior is in charge and nothing can happen... that He doesn't allow or that He isn't in control of!
There was only one survivor of a shipwreck that washed up on a small, uninhabited island. He prayed feverishly for God to rescue him... and each and every day he scanned the horizon for help... but none seemed forthcoming. Exhausted... he eventually managed to build a hut out of driftwood to protect him from the elements.. and to store his few possessions. But, one day... after scavenging for food... he arrived home to find his little hut in flames... the smoke rolling up into the sky... the worst thing had happened; all that he had... which wasn't much at all... was lost!
He was stunned with grief and anger... and asked this question, "God, how could you
do this to me?!?" as he cried. Early the next day however... he was awakened by the sound of a ship that was approaching the island. It had come to rescue him.
"How did you know I was here?" asked the weary man of his rescuers. They very simply replied, "We saw your smoke signals..."
It is so easy to get discouraged when things are going bad... but we can't lose heart... If we belong to God... we can be assured that He is at work in our lives... even in the midst of any pain and suffering... that we might feel!
Remember, the next time your little hut is burning to the ground... it may be a smoke signal that summons the grace of God!
