Fear can be an overwhelming emotion that can paralyse anyone in an instant. For me nighttime would do just that! I did not like to be alone at night and I could not get to sleep when I was alone. Every little noise was amplified and I was convinced I heard the door knob rattle as if someone was trying to enter the house.
It wasn't often that Don had to travel or be out late on a case... but when he was, I fought with my fears and my faith. I would line and build up the space in front of each door with canned food items... in the hope that the noise from a "break in" would alert me immediately. I would get my sleeping boys and put them in bed with me.... and then I would pray. Oh how the Lord must have grieved at my excessive fears and my great lack of faith.
However, our God is merciful and he understands our human frailties... there are many scripture verses that he has given me to trust Him more fully. When I am alone, I quote these scriptures and subsequently over the years my faith has greatly increased. My confidence is no longer in canned foods! Now, I have learned to "PRAY FIRST" and I can truly say that my fears... though not gone completely... they have diminished considerably. My fears do not rule me any longer... they do not paralyse me. I can lie in bed and meditate on the Word of God... and usually I will drift off to sleep in peace... just of like the little koala above. How do they sleep in tree branches???
If you battle with fears of any kind... my prayer is that you will... "Get into God's Word, meditate on it and pray it!" We may be human and have our frailties... but God is always there to help us overcome! We can have victory and be at peace!
Here are just a few scriptures I have used for my fears:
In God I will praise his word, in God I have put my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do unto me. Psalm 56:4
The LORD is on my side; I will not fear: what can man do unto me? Psalm 118:6
Be not afraid of sudden fear, neither of the desolation of the wicked, when it cometh. Proverbs 3:25
Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness. Isaiah 41:10
Though an host should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear: though war should rise against me, in this will I be confident. Psalm 27:3
