John 13:34
This verse is one tall order for the natural man. However, if we have accepted Jesus into our lives, we know that in Him we can do "all things!" (See: Philippians 4:13) Whatever we have or wherever we go, we can make it through anything, in the One who makes us who we are.
As Christians our desire should be to love, just as Jesus loved. However, being human.... it isn't always as easy as that.
To have a heart that is fervently merciful, charitable, and able to love others unconditionally, doesn't just happen. Jesus was, is, and forever will be "love" (see: 1 John 4:16) but, we are not, we are human and our humanness fails.
Think about the person who has hurt you, lied about you, or gossiped about you?? Part of us finds it difficult to love in those moments and harder still to forgive instantly, most likely because we don't want to be hurt again.
I know that it hasn't been easy for me to love unconditionally at all times. I have lived through abuse that makes a person hate and there was a time when I lived with nothing but hatred.
Still, the Bible says, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." We don't stand a chance at genuinely loving on our own -- but we have every chance in the world if we learn to love in and through Christ! And, when we love in Christ Jesus -- the hatred begins to dissipate.
And, It's amazing the peace that comes when we learn to stop hating and start loving through Jesus!
When we learn to live in Christ -- He then dwells in us. As we make our home in Christ and His Word is at home in us, we can be sure that whatever we ask will be heard and acted upon.
Jesus, will give us what we need to love the unlovable. He will show us how to forgive, how to be gentle and how to be compassionate.
Apart from Him we can do nothing -- but we can do ALL things through our loving and generous Savior! We can even learn to love the unlovable!!
