John 10:27,28
Have you ever wondered why Christians are compared to sheep? Why not a graceful gazelle or a powerful ram?
When we look at known facts about sheep we learn that, sheep are not brainy or resourceful. They are not able or crafty when it comes to staying safe and they tend to wander away from the protection of their shepherd.
There is no comparison to the wisdom of God and human intelligence. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness. And again, The Lord knoweth the thoughts of the wise, that they are vain.
1 Corinthians 3:19
However, sheep respond to and know their shepherds voice. They hear him as he approaches the flock. While there may be other flocks mixed in, when sheep hear their shepherds voice they react and will follow him.
Still... sheep will wander aimlessly -- they will get lost easily. It is not unusual for a grazing sheep to meander and saunter away. It is then that the shepherd goes after it. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. Isaiah 53:6
When a sheep wanders off from the rest of the herd, it becomes almost impossible for it to find its way back to the flock. The sheep has no sense of direction -- it is the same for those of us who have wandered away from God. We lack spiritual direction and we can not find our way back to God by ourselves.
Still, we have a shepherd who will not leave us to our own demise or annihilation. What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it? Luke 15:4
Think of that -- while there are many sheep in the flock, when one is missing, our Lord knows and cares. We all have lost loved ones and as we pray for their return to the flock, we can be assured by God's Holy Word that He is looking for the lost. And, Jesus will not stop looking until He finds the lost one!
When Jesus goes after our lost loved ones, we can be sure that He will bring them back. He will carry them across His broad shoulders, rejoicing as He brings them home!
It will be a time of celebration when the lost have been found! We can count on this -- there is more joy in heaven over one sinner's rescued life than over the ninety-nine who are still in the fold and in no need of rescue.
If you don't know the Lord Jesus -- He is calling for you! He is waiting for you to respond to His voice. If you are a sheep that knows the good shepherd, but you have lost your way -- listen for that familiar voice, the good shepherd is calling your name also!
Will you respond today??
