even the salvation of your souls.
1 PETER 1:8-9
FEELING A BIT DOWN
When the gas gauge on your car is near empty... you KNOW your car will not be running much longer! Well, the Lord knows and understands and is well aware of the days that
we are feeling despondent and sad. So He gives freely
of the "Oil of Joy!"
To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give them
beauty for ashes, the "oil of joy" for mourning, the garment
of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called
trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that He might
So let the "Redeemed of the Lord" shout for joy!
Give the Lord Praises and see the "oil of joy" poured out
on you this very day!
The Apostle Peter blesses and is thankful to God for his special benefits and for Christ Jesus, in these Scriptures. This epistle is addressed to believers in general, who are strangers in every city or country where they live, and are scattered through out all the nations.
We are encouraged to ascribe our salvation to the accepting the love of our Father, the redemption of His Son, Jesus Christ, and the sanctification of the Holy Spirit; and so to give glory to one God in three Persons, into whose name we have been baptized.
TRUSTING GOD ALONE FOR SALVATION
We love Him even though we have never seen Him; though not seeing him, we trust Him; and even now "we have unspeakable joy" with the inexpressible hope that comes from heaven itself. And we have a further reward for trusting Him; the salvation of our souls. This salvation is something the prophets did not fully understand.
Though they wrote about it, they had many questions as to what it all could mean. They wondered what the Spirit of Christ within them was talking about, for he told them to write down the events which, since then, have happened to Christ: His suffering, and His great glory afterwards. And they wondered when and to whom all this would happen,
they were finally told it would not be in their lifetime,
but long years later.
OUR HOPE AND OUR JOY IS NOT AS THE WORLDS
Hope, in the world's phrase, refers only to an uncertain good, for all worldly hopes are tottering, building upon sand, and the world's joys of heaven are blind and groundless conjectures. Nonetheless, "The hopes and joys of the sons of the living God are alive!"
The early Christians stood apart from the culture and suffered stigmas and physical persecutions at times. Peter challenged them to remain faithful to Jesus who also suffered for not conforming to this world. Great hope and joy comes to us from the death and resurrection of our Lord and Savior!
GOD'S MERCIES ARE NEW EVERY MORNING
Great mercy and grace has been bestowed upon us, throughout the Scriptures. It enlivens and comforts us in all distresses, enables us to meet and get over all difficulties; "it gives us all hope and joy for living in Christ's love for us!
The matter of each Christian's joy unspeakable, is the remembrance of the hope laid up for him. It is incorruptible, it cannot come to nothing, it is an estate that cannot be spent. Also spotless; this signifies its purity and perfection; as it does not fade; is not sometimes more or less pleasant, but ever the same, it is still all our hope and joy!
