Jesus said unto them, "Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.
JOHN 8:58
THE GREAT "I AM"
AND
FINDING OUR MIRACLES
TOGETHER
GOD, JESUS & THE GREAT "I AM"
So, let's attempt to break down these powerful words and truths. First and foremost, "I AM!" Nowhere in the Bible will we find any specific verse where Jesus says the word, I am God.
This does not mean that Jesus never claimed to be God. Jesus would never have been crucified, had he not committed blasphemy. What is blasphemy you may ask? It was
any person claiming to be God.
Many people try to argue that Jesus never claimed to be God and they will ask questions like, "Where exactly in the Bible does Jesus claim to be God?" Don't let those kinds of
questions confound or perplex you!
REVERENCE OR IRREVERENCE
In the Gospel of John, we are told: Then they took up stones to cast at him: but Jesus hid, and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.(JOHN 8:59)
Because (in our top verse) Jesus made this statement: "Before Abraham was, I AM."
You were stoned for heresy which was blasphemy in those days, for claiming to be God. They wouldn't crucify people for declaring, I am the best person that ever lived, they wouldn't even crucify you for being insane! However, they most definitely would murder you in cold blood for
claiming to be God Himself!
GOD AND JESUS
Jesus was claiming to be God when he said, "Before Abraham was, I AM!" His words mirrored the time God disclosed himself to Moses in the 'burning bush' (see EXODUS 3:14) Here, God says to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM!"
The Greek Bible translates this as "I Am the Being," and Jesus' statement here confirms this teaching. And in our Bible, John states: "I am the Alpha and the Omega, says the Lord God,
who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty." (REVELATION 1:8) and "I am the Alpha and the Omega,
the first and the last, the beginning and the end."
(REVELATION 22:13)
This is very important because it means that Jesus was before Abraham, in some previous point of time and that he created Abraham. Jesus was claiming to be the very God of Israel, the Creator of our universe as chronicled in the Old Testament. If this wasn't the truth of Jesus' claim, then he never would have been crucified!
EXACTLY WHO WAS THIS JESUS
When Jesus stated what was in, (JOHN 8:58) the Jewish leaders knew that Jesus was comparing Himself to God and in doing
so, they condemned him for committing blasphemy!
When the soldiers came to get Jesus while he was in the garden praying, he again said, "I AM He!" His voice and words were so mighty and potent that the soldiers were knocked off their feet and fell backward to the ground. (see JOHN 18: 6)
So you see, Jesus was, is and always will be, "The Great I AM!" What does that mean for you and me? His words confirm and reflect the exact name of God in Hebrew, which is Yahweh! Yahweh means, "to be" or "the self-existing one!" Jesus
was proclaiming as His own, POWER AND AUTHORITY!
JESUS NEVER CHANGES
HEBREWS 13:8 states: Jesus Christ the same, yesterday, and today and forever. Therefore we can trust Jesus to be the "Great I AM" and that he is forever the same, from all our yesterdays to all our tomorrows!
He is everything we need to live and function while we travel through this earthly home until we are finally home with Him in heaven! There is no greater power than in the
